1988年に発表されたディズニー作品を集めたコンピレーションです。

とは言っても、普通のディズニーアルバムではないんです。
本作品のサブタイトルが、”Various Interpretations of Music from VIntage Disney FIlms”、意味合いとしては「ディズニーの映画音楽作品の様々な解釈」ということなので、ディズニーソングをいろんなアーティストが自分なりの解釈で歌ったらどうなるか、という実験的な作品と言ってもよいでしょう。プロデューサーは、個性的なトリビュートアルバムを作らせたら右に出るものはいない、ハル・ウィルナーですので、当然期待も膨らむ訳ですね。

ということで、参加アーティストはナタリー・マーチャント、スザンヌ・ヴェガ、ボニー・レイット、アーロン・ネヴィル、ジェームス・テイラー、リンゴ・スターと言った、ディズニー風に親しみやすく聴かせてくれそうなアーティストたちから、ロス・ロボス、トム・ウェイツ、NRBQ、バスター・ポインデクスター、サン・ラと言った個性的なアーティストまで、実にユニーク。そして皆それぞれの持つ個性をいかんなく発揮しているところがいいです。

個人的には「ピーターパン」の挿入歌 “Second Star to The Right” を優しく歌い上げるジェームス・テイラー、「ミッキー・マウス・マーチ」を完全なネヴィル節にしてしまうアーロン・ネヴィル、そしてハーブ・アルパートのトランペットが印象的なリンゴ・スターの「星に願いを」あたりが聴き所です。
ちょっと興味深いところでは、トム・ウェイツとサン・ラの演奏です。ハリー・ニルソンの “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” では、アート・リンゼイのめちゃめちゃですごいギターも聴けます。

いろんな人の個性が出まくりの作品で、ディズニーアルバムのコーナーに置かれることのないタイプの作品ですが、ディズニーの枠には収まらない魅力が詰まった作品です。そう言う意味では、甘いも酸いも知ってる大人向けのディズニー系コンピレーション、と言うことになるのかもしれません。
